Video Commentary on my Design Goals & Challenges

Design Goals

  • One of my design goals was to create a 2017 sandbox. I would need to make sure aspects like the economy, armies and world leaders were in tune with 2017.

  • Once I finished designing and implementing the 2017 sandbox, I then worked on making the campaign for the Trump Rising DLC. The basis of the campaign was that the player controlled the United States as Donald Trump and tried to fulfill his campaign promises. I implemented all the main objectives of the campaign, such as successfully taking over North Korea, or building a wall along the border to Mexico. However, I had to design it in such a way that the objectives flowed properly for the player and they didn't feel too overwhelmed. Along with making sure that the campaign was fun to play, satirical and balanced so that players could successfully beat it.

Design Challenge

One of the main challenges I encountered when designing the Trump Rising campaign was making sure that it was actually balanced and engaging. Our initial objectives were taking out North Korea, destroying ISIS and building the Trump Wall. However, initial playtests showed it was too easy for players to do these tasks due to the scale and power of the US army. I had a few ideas on how to improve it, but the main one I decided on was adding larger challenging fictional objectives. Since this was considered a satire DLC, the additional objectives didn't need to be entirely accurate. The two main objectives I added were taking over Russia and China. These new objectives would add longevity to the campaign due to the difficulty and planning needed to beat them. With the addition of these main objectives plus some side objectives our playtests showed players were more engaged and taking longer to complete it. After release, the players really seemed to enjoy the campaign.
